Service Opportunities

Interfaith Shelter Network

Once a year, usually in February, we host up to twelve guests who are experiencing homelessness for two weeks.  We provide shelter, breakfast, a packed lunch and a hot dinner.   We have participated in this program since 1987. It takes almost 100 volunteers to support the program, from overnight hosts to dinner providers to weekend church-sitters to launderers.  We house families, women with children and single adults.  All guests are referred to us by case managers who screen them for appropriateness to be in the program. If you’d like to volunteer, please call the church office at 619-426-2211.

Prayers and Squares

Prayers & Squares’ purpose is to promote love and prayers.  The idea behind a prayer quilt is simple: a colorful but simple quilt is made; a heavy thread is pulled through the quilt layers: the ends are left free to be tied. As each knot is tied, a prayer is said for someone with a special need. Individuals tie a square knot, saying a silent prayer for that someone. Then the finished quilt is given to the person in need.  It gives recipients something tangible to feel and touch, knowing that many people have shared their love and concern through this gift. Through the ministry at Chula Vista Presbyterian Church, hundreds of quilts have been distributed, each a special gift of love. They have been made for people near and far, adults and children in times of celebration, joy, sorrow, encouragement and support. We welcome anyone who would like to help with this ministry. You don’t have to be a quilter or even own a sewing machine.  We have a job for you!  If you’d like to join the group or if you’d like a prayer quilt for someone you know, call the church office at 619-426-2211.

Mother’s Morning Out

We host Mother’s Morning Out on Wednesdays from 9am to 1pm. This program offers childcare from infant to five years of age. During the morning, children are introduced to the love of God through play, music, crafts, activities, and Bible stories. To register your child for this program, call the church office at 619-426-2211.
